Cohousing is about groups of people creating and managing their own neighborhood, their own community. A primary concern of cohousing is developing well-constructed homes and stable communities. Another goal has been elusive: developing affordable homes. Building more expensive houses means more profit for the builders and financiers. Thus, housing costs and prices follow the market. Building affordable housing for the millions of people who earn less than the median income means changing the system, or working around it.
